Color Mixing and Shapes

Color mixing and shapes made with 3 basic colors in the primaries (red, yellow, blue) - in this case I used Nickel Azo Yellow, Transparent Red Iron Oxide (or Quinacridone Burnt Orange) and Paynes Gray - painting those out in various squares and then added bits of black and white to each color, this was all mixed right on the page,  not on a palette, so amazing the variations in the color range that emerged. This is especially good to do on those rare occasions when you don't know what to do next. It's all about Playing and enjoying that to the fullest, right here right now, this moment, that brush and what it does with those colors. If you really just Play and sink into it, then you have this Experience and that's always the best, you can't buy that Experience, it belongs to you  . . .

ReInventing CutUps

CutUps of Old Paintings ReInvented with a bit of weaving some of them together while working on backgrounds for the next great Sketchbook Project 2012. This will be my third year of doing the sketchbooks - previous years are on the sidebar - here are closeups of a couple backgrounds, they're really much bigger, but zooming in on them is kindof interesting and changes perspective and thoughts, always a good thing . . .

Series of Chairs - 1

Chairs - first in series I've been wanting to do for a long time, just fascinated by all the shapes and possibilities, how far you can push it before it's no longer recognizable for its original purpose and how sometimes we spend way too much time sitting in chairs when we should be moving instead but sometimes at the end of the day it's the best thing ever just to sink into your chair, your chair and what makes it yours and not someone else's chair and that's the kind of thoughts going into this series. Meanwhile sitting in My Chair tonight, contemplating some changes to the appearance of this blog so that's coming along and things will look a bit different soon . . .

Change of Habit

Change is Good Change is Your Friend - that was my slogan for years and years when I was a computer trainer and I had it posted in my training room to help students through software upgrades that threatened to change the way they did everything essential to their jobs. It was meant to be a kindof subliminal message as they zoned out occasionally while listening to my oh-so-calm voice talking them through the new procedures. Well many's the time I tell you truly when I've had those words thrust right back at me, challenging me to accept changes in my own life. Yeah it doesn't just apply to software. So after doing the 30 days of art I find now that a day just doesn't feel right if I'm not doing some kindof painting, so a new habit has been forged. I stop and look at my worktable and dab on a bit of color here and there and the next thing you know I'm well into it and where did the time go? So this all ties into my belief that if you commit to doing something, anything, it Will Change You. The hard part is the Commitment, the hard part is Starting and how many times have you heard that before? like a million times probably but then one day you just Start and that makes all the difference . . .

Portal

Synchronicity Parallel Universitality sometimes you go through this portal to somewhere else and didn't notice when it happened - alot of good artwork gets done there, would like to live there all the time, a few thoughts about that . . .

Between two worlds life hovers like a star,
twixt night and morn, upon the horizon's verge
How little do we know that which we are!
How less what we may be!

Autumn Fall Back

Today we Fell Back to sunshine and dreams of the perfect autumn day with endless blue skies and dappled shadows, back when the piles of pumpkins and gourds were brand new first of the season and not staying on bedraggled and rainsoaked towards November and holidays, back when every day was a promise of things to come and not the reality that finally settled in of gray monochromed Seattle, yes I know I've lived here not quite forever and know very well about the weather here and even in that Seattle Way, welcome the rain - we miss it when it's gone too long without, but still even now it takes an adjustment to get used to November, an attitude adjustment and I can't quite let go yet, of that perfect autumn - memories lingering and painting this takes me right back to it . . .
